Le’Veon Bell is ready to carry the load for the Pittsburgh Steelers as they prepare to enter a significant stretch of time without quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
“I’m prepared for whatever,” Bell said after Sunday’s win over the Rams via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “If Ben goes down, it might be a little more headed toward the running game if the franchise quarterback is down. We revolve a lot of things around him. That’s something I prepare for. I’m ready for whatever they ask me to do. I don’t think there is ever a time when there is too much on my shoulders. I want to go out there and continue to make plays and help this team win games.”
Big Ben may be out six weeks with his knee injury, meaning Michael Vick will be the team’s quarterback for the foreseeable future. Vick has been an inconsistent passer and turnover machine when he’s seen action the past few years. The Steelers will probably want to keep the ball out of his hands and put it in Bell’s as much as possible.
After being suspended the first two games of the season, Bell posted 132 total yards in his Week 3 debut. That was the kind of outing that’s become typical of the third-year back out of Michigan State, who posted 2,215 total yards last season. Even DeAngelo Williams, who looked good the first two games of the season for Pittsburgh, took a backseat to Bell and only had one carry. We imagine Bell and Williams will see a lot of work as Pittsburgh tries to take the pressure off Vick. The only problem is they’ll need to sustain drives in order to have carries to spread around, and that may prove to be a challenge.
