Tennessee screwed by referee at end of loss to Florida (Video)

Referee Tennessee

Tennessee blew a 27-14 fourth quarter lead against Florida at The Swamp on Saturday and lost 28-27 after they narrowly missed a 55-yard field goal as time expired. The referees didn’t exactly help out their efforts at the end.

The Gators scored on consecutive drives, including a 63-yard TD on a 4th-and-14 play to take the lead on the Vols. Tennessee then tried to operate a two-minute drill, but it didn’t go too well.

With a 2nd-and-2 and 10 seconds left at the Florida 36, Tennessee picked up a first down. It looked like Ethan Wolf got out of bounds to stop the clock, and the referee appeared to show that. However, they marked him in bounds and the clock ran after the the Vols set up. They lost seven seconds, giving them just three left to kick the field goal. Add a substitution penalty on top of it, and it was a huge mess.

If Wolf were marked out of bounds or if the official were more clear that he was in bounds, Tennessee might have acted accordingly so that they could have run one more play before attempting a field goal. With the leg Aaron Medley showed on his attempt, that kick might have gone in from a little closer.
