Cardale Jones was benched during the second quarter of Saturday’s victory over Northern Illinois in favor of J.T. Barrett. After the game, Jones made a change to his Twitter profile that appears to make light of the situation.
The bio portion of Jones’ profile now reads “3rd string QB @ The Ohio State University Oh Wait, 2nd String”
Jones was, of course, third on Urban Meyer’s depth chart last season behind Braxton Miller and Barrett. Both sustained injuries, opening the door for Jones, who made the most of the opportunity granted to him. In his first start, he helped the Buckeyes to a win in the Big Ten Championship Game. Jones followed that up with a win over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, and victory over Oregon in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.
Meyer declared Jones the starter prior to this season’s opening game against Virginia Tech. He responded by throwing for 187 yards with two touchdowns and running for 99 yards with another score in the 42-24 win over the Hokies. In week 2, Jones did not register a touchdown and was held to 111 yards passing on 18 attempts by Hawaii. Jones fumbled twice, but was able to recover both.
On Saturday, Jones threw an interception on Ohio State’s first possession, the result of an overthrown pass. In the second quarter, he didn’t see a defender who cut in front of the intended receiver for his second interception of the game, leading Meyer to make the change.
It’s too early to know who will start next week’s game versus Western Michigan, but it sounds like whoever it is may have the job for the foreseeable future.
Meyer said he may be ready to stick with one QB: "I do believe in game reps. I'm going to spend a long time thinking about that."
