Osi Umenyiora signed a one-day contract with the New York Giants so he could retire with the team on Wednesday, but he did get one last-minute inquiry from another team before hanging up his cleats.
The New York Daily News reports that the Jets reached out to Umenyiora on Tuesday to apparently make him an offer.
“I actually got an offer on Tuesday to go play, which I thought was pretty ironic. They wait to the day before I’m supposed to retire, like ‘Hey, what’s going on?’ Like no, ‘I’m okay.’ … For me, it was either I was going to play for the Giants, or I wasn’t going to play football at all.”
The Daily News reports the team in question was the Jets, though the Jets reportedly say they were only updating their files.
The Jets’ interest in Umenyiora would make some sense; they have injuries to players like Calvin Pace and Muhammad Wilkerson, and Sheldon Richardson is suspended for at least the first four games of the season.
