Ryan Mallett reportedly will start for Texans in Week 2

Ryan Mallett Texans

Bill O’Brien might have the quickest hook by a coach in NFL history.

All reports indicate that Ryan Mallett will start at quarterback for the Texans in Week 2 at Carolina rather than Brian Hoyer, who struggled in a home loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

O’Brien said on “Hard Knocks” that he would not hesitate to make a change at QB if he wasn’t getting the kind of production he sought, and he was not lying. Hoyer went 18/34 for 236 yards and a touchdown as Houston lost 27-20 to KC in a game that really wasn’t very close. Mallett took over the offense late and led the team on a touchdown drive.

The Houston Texans’ quarterback situation reminds me of a great quote by Cher’s dad in “Clueless.” In telling Cher not to go driving around in her new Jeep with best friend Dionne, papa Horowitz says “two permits do not equal a license.” Someone should remind O’Brien that two career backups does not equal a starter. We have a feeling he’s going to realize that over the next few weeks.
