Justin Blackmon has been arguably one of the biggest wastes of talent in football over the past several years, and the Jacksonville Jaguars aren’t about to let him stop wasting it in the CFL.
Earlier this month, the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts reportedly acquired the rights to Blackmon. In order for Blackmon to be able to play in the CFL, the Jaguars would have to let him out of his current contract, which runs through the 2016 season. According to Alex Marvez of FOX Sports, the Jaguars would “most likely not” allow Blackmon to leave.
Of course, Blackmon would need more than just a release from his Jaguars contract to pursue a career in the CFL. Under the “Ricky Williams rule,” any player suspended by another professional football league is not allowed to play in the CFL until he is reinstated. Blackmon has been suspended indefinitely by the NFL in the wake of his most recent arrest, which was for marijuana possession last summer. The former Oklahoma State star was also arrested for driving while under the influence in 2010 and 2012.
The Florida Times-Union previously reported that the Jaguars are not cutting Blackmon because they are searching for a way to recoup some of the $7.1 million signing bonus they gave him when drafting him with the No. 5 overall pick in 2012.
Blackmon and this star NFL receiver should get together sometime to talk about screwing up a career. I’m sure they would have plenty to discuss.
