Chip Kelly: Tim Tebow released because he is not good enough right now

Tim Tebow Eagles

When the Philadelphia Eagles traded Matt Barkley to the Arizona Cardinals on Friday, many thought that was an indication Tim Tebow had made the team. Weren’t we all surprised.

The Eagles made Tebow one of their cuts on Saturday, and head coach Chip Kelly said it was because the quarterback is not “good enough” right now.

“Tim’s really progressed but we didn’t feel like he was good enough to be the three right now,” Kelly said. “He just needs to get out there and get more reps.”

Kelly also said the team plans to add a third quarterback either to the active roster or practice squad. Matt Cassel was cut by the Buffalo Bills and could be an option unless another team gets to him first.

Tebow’s stats from the preseason were respectable. He went 21-of-36 for 286 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, while rushing for 82 yards and a score, but Kelly probably focused on the plays and decisions Tebow did not make well.

Eagles reporter Jeff McLane pointed to one example of Tebow missing an open target:

Tebow is still better than many other third-string QBs in the league, so it’s possible his showing with the Eagles will help him land a gig with another team. He just needs to keep practicing and working hard for when injuries occur.
