Texas booster Red McCombs not optimistic about season: We don’t ‘have the horses’

If there is anyone who would be looking forward to Texas’ upcoming season, you figure it would be one of their top boosters — a man who has poured over $100 million into the university. But Longhorns booster Red McCombs says he is not optimistic about what the football team will do this season.

“I’m extremely optimistic that this is going to be a great college football season, but the Longhorns won’t be sharing in that,” McCombs said Tuesday via MySanAntonio.com’s Mike Finger. “I don’t believe they have the horses.”

Based on what he has been told by head coach Charlie Strong, this will be a rebuilding year for Texas and its second-year coach.

“Coach Strong told me he really likes the young guys,” McCombs said. “He said he plans to play more freshman than he ever has. I told him that can be a good thing.”

McCombs’ pessimistic outlook regarding the upcoming season for the Longhorns should not be a huge surprise. Recall that the mega-donor was not too happy with the hire in the first place when it was made last year, though he says he is supportive of Strong and the school’s athletic director. Or maybe McCombs comes from the LeBron James school of downplaying expectations publicly despite feeling more confident about your squad privately.
