Calgary Arts and Culture

For students attending university for the first time, life is not all about classes. College life can be stressful and it’s important to maintain a strong social life and engage in activities outside of your academics. The Calgary region offers a wealth of incredible cultural attractions that will appeal especially to those students majoring in the arts and humanities, but are fun and exciting for just about any university attendee. As you settle into your SFU real estate, consider taking some time to experience these local color events.

Dance

For those students interested in the performing arts, there are tons of amazing dance studios in the city. Whether you are interested in ballet, ballroom dancing, traditional dance or modern interpretive dance, any of the hundreds of schools and studios in the region can help. The University of Calgary even offers a four-year bachelor’s program.

Alberta Ballet is the third-largest dance company in the entire nation and is known all over the world. With over 30 classically trained dancers from eight different nations and performances running from September all through May, this company’s shows are not to be missed.

Visual Arts

No matter where your SFU real estate may be, whether you attend the University of Calgary, the Alberta College of Art and Design, or any of the area’s other art schools, you can find top-notch education in the visual arts. The scene in the area is vibrant and eclectic and includes not only public art galleries, but studios, collectives and shops.

The Glenbow Museum features unusual and interesting stories from Canada’s western region as well as breathtaking historical exhibits and artwork from the world over. This museum is one of the most well-known in the entire region and features a stunning permanent collection as well as hosting the best traveling exhibits. In addition to being a museum and art gallery, it features a top-notch library, making it a popular destination for students.

Music

If music is your passion, you can find any form and style you like in our city. On any given night, events from both local and world-renowned musicians take place in clubs and concert venues everywhere. From classical to country-western to rock to hip-hop and R&B, Calgary has a vibrant music scene.

Be sure to take the time to attend any of our number of music festivals, including the Calgary Folk Music Festival, the International Blues Festival, the International Reggae Festival, or the Badlands Summer Music Festival. All of these feature performances from eclectic, colorful and fun artists from all over the region and world.

Theatre

No arts and cultural scene would be complete without top-notch live theatre and our city is no different. The hub for all things performance art is the Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts. It is home to several professional companies which include Alberta Theatre Projects, Theatre Calgary and One Yellow Rabbit. Pegasus Performances features interactive murder mysteries at the Deane House Restaurant in Inglewood, and is a must-attend for those new to the area.
