Ricky Nolasco furious with Jose Ramirez, hints Twins will hit him

Kurt Suzuki Paul Molitor

The Minnesota Twins took exception to the way Jose Ramirez celebrated a home run he hit on Wednesday, and Ricky Nolasco hinted that the second baseman may be in line for a plunking.

Ramirez went 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs in the Indians’ 10-1 win over the Twins in the second half of a doubleheader. He had an RBI double in the second, but it was after his 3-run home run in the eighth that the Twins were so upset.

Ramirez admired the towering shot he crushed off Nolasco and even did a massive bat flip. The homer led many Twins, such as Kurt Suzuki and manager Paul Molitor, to come to the top step of the dugout to curse out Ramirez.

After the game, Nolasco said Ramirez would “get his,” which seems to be his way of saying he’ll be hit by a pitch.

Nolasco also supposedly called the celebration a “horses— move.”

Indians manager Terry Francona recognized his infielder went too far with the celebration, saying he had a “good swing, poor judgement.”

The irony is these teams are getting into a fight over a supposed disrespectful celebration the same day a major article comes out about the culture clash in baseball. Umpires better be on high alert during Thursday’s finale.

Bud Norris apologizes for culture clash comments

Bud Norris Padres

Bud Norris apologized for his comments about wanting foreign players to adapt to the American style of baseball when it comes to respecting the game.

Norris’ comments were published Wednesday in a USA Today article suggesting that most fights in baseball are due to a culture clash between players of different ethnic backgrounds. Norris said foreign players who are coming in and making American dollars need to respect the American pastime and way it is played. The San Diego Padres pitcher apologized for his remarks later in the day.

“I want to apologize for how it came out and the words that were taken out of context in passing. I apologize to anyone I might have offended. I love this game and admire everyone who plays this game with all the passion that I do,” Norris said via The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Dennis Lin.

Norris also said he actually learned a few things by reading the comments of other players in the article.

“Actually in reading the article, I learned a lot more out of [Carlos Gomez’s] point of view,” Norris said. “I never had the opportunity to play winter ball in a foreign country, and I guess a lot of players have said that they’ve learned some things about how they play the game. There’s things that culturally I don’t understand and haven’t seen with my own eyes. I don’t think I offended (Gomez) in any way, but we all come from different walks of life. Whether I was born in California and taught the game this way or in Mississippi or the Dominican or Japan or anywhere, we all come from different cultural backgrounds and we love this game, and that should be the No. 1 focus.”

At least Norris was quick to apologize and seems to be learning something. Maybe that’s all some players really need. They may not have considered that other players come from cultures where the game is played differently, so their behavior is not intended as disrespect and should not be taken that way.

Yoenis Cespedes avoids serious injury after being hit on hand (Video)

Yoenis Cespedes hand

The New York Mets appear to have avoided disaster.

Slugger Yoenis Cespedes was hit on the hand during the top of the third inning of the team’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies Wednesday and left the game. He went inside the clubhouse to be examined and undergo evaluation. Luckily the X-rays were negative, and the team said he just has a contusion on two fingers.

Here is a look at the video of him being hit.

Cespedes was lucky in that the pitch from Justin De Fratus came in at 89 mph and not an even higher speed that could have done more damage.

Cespedes had walked and scored a run earlier in the game. He was replaced in the lineup by Kirk Nieuwenhuis.

Cespedes has practically earned celebrity status since being acquired by the Mets mid-season. He has batted .287 with 18 doubles and 17 home runs, producing a .941 OPS in 53 games with his new team. He has given the Mets a serious weapon in the middle of the lineup, and the team would dread to lose him for much time.

Tony Buzbee wants Texas A&M to play Texas as ‘cupcake game’

nebraska-texas-trash

The Texas-Texas A&M football rivalry is one that goes back to the 1890s. However, the two schools last played in 2011 as the Aggies joined the SEC in 2012. Texas A&M regent Tony Buzbee would like to see the series renewed, but not necessarily because of its storied history.

Buzbee took to his Facebook page on Wednesday to advocate Texas A&M playing Texas again because the Aggies need some relief due to the gauntlet that is the SEC schedule.

tony-buzbee-facebook

Ouch.

After a run of sustained success during the early 2000s, the Longhorns haven’t reached double-digit victories since 2010 and it’s clear the perception of the program from outsiders isn’t the same as it once was. Texas is off to a 1-3 start this season after finishing 6-7 a year ago, Charlie Strong’s first as head coach. Once the premier college football program in the state, the Longhorns have seen TCU, Baylor, and Texas A&M pass them with each in the top 15 of this week’s Coaches Poll.

I’m pretty sure Tony Buzbee isn’t the only one who wouldn’t mind seeing Texas on its school’s football schedule right about now.

Martellus Bennett has beef with NFL over shoe fine

Martellus Bennett X

One would have to imagine Martellus Bennett was already unhappy with the Bears falling to 0-3 after a 26-0 loss to the Seahawks on Sunday. To make matters worse, he was fined $5,787 for his choice of shoes during the game.

Bennett has played in all 16 regular season games each year since 2012. However, they haven’t all been pain free. The veteran tight end has battled foot ailments in recent years, but has finally found a pair of shoes that help alleviate the pain.

The Jordan Brand cleats Bennett prefers are black. The problem is, the Bears designated prior to the season their predominate shoe color would be white. The result is Bennett having to cough up some money which, obviously, isn’t sitting well with him.

“I’m just pissed off at the NFL,” Bennett said via the the Chicago Tribune. “They get mad because my cleats are too black, but they’re perfect for my feet. And I feel like they’re supposed to protect the players, and I have a certain shoe that feels the best with my foot. I’ve had foot problems over the last two years.”

“I black out the logo so I don’t get fined for wearing something that’s not official or whatever, but they’re too black,” he said. “Maybe I’m going to have to paint them white.”

Bennett has a couple of options. He could continue to wear the more comfortable shoe, knowing he’ll have to write a check each week, or switch to one that’s mostly white but may cause discomfort. Or he could paint the ones he has, I suppose. It sounds as though the decision has already been made. Bennett is opting to avoid further fines (for now) since he will have to eventually pay for his daughter’s college education.

An ideal scenario would be for Jordan Brand to come up with a white version of Bennett’s preferred shoe. Given his insistence they help, Nike has to come through for him, right?

Report: Giants, Tim Lincecum have ‘mutual and strong’ interest in return

Tim-Lincecum-John-Smoltz

With the Giants officially being eliminated from postseason contention on Tuesday after an 8-0 defeat at the hands of the Dodgers, who clinched their third straight NL West title, the focus for San Francisco is now on next season. And one of the first orders of business could be bringing back veteran right-hander Tim Lincecum for another tour of duty with the team.

Lincecum, who had not pitched since late June due to a right forearm contusion and a degenerative hip condition, shares mutual interest with the Giants in returning to the team after the season, according to Andrew Baggarly of the Mercury News who wrote about the state of affairs in San Francisco after Tuesday’s effectively season-ending loss:

There wasn’t an opportunity for Tim Lincecum to acknowledge the fans, as he had hoped. But there’s still a chance he’ll be back this weekend.

In any event, a goodbye might not be necessary. The interest is mutual and strong to re-sign Lincecum, from what I’m told. It’s more a matter of when, how much and in what form, rather than if.

The 31-year-old Lincecum, who recently left the team to rehab his hips, will see his two-year, $35 million deal expire at the end of the year. It was a disastrous overpay by just about every tangible metric, but if Lincecum is willing to take a hometown discount, it looks like an extension of The Freak’s tenure in the Bay Area could be in the cards.

Over the last few seasons, Lincecum has seen his velocity and his control nosedive faster than Macaulay Culkin’s acting career. His back-to-back Cy Young Awards in 2008 and 2009 and his four consecutive All-Star appearances from 2008 to 2011 might as well have taken place during the Bronze Age at this point. But as a local favorite and a winner of three World Series rings with the team, San Francisco, both management and fans alike, will be more than amicable to a Lincecum return provided that the price is right. And provided that Lincecum can stomach said return.

Kate Upton: Justin Verlander got blackout drunk after terrible start

Justin Verlander Brad Ausmus

Maybe Justin Verlander really is just like the rest of us. Well, with the exception of the supermodel girlfriend, $200 million contract, and fastball that can touch 100 mph. But like the rest of us, Verlander sometimes washes away his problems by getting blackout drunk. So says girlfriend Kate Upton.

Marin Cogan wrote a feature on The Ricketts family — which owns the Chicago Cubs — for ESPN the Magazine, and the relationship between Todd Ricketts and Kate Upton was discussed in the piece.

Cogan at one point quotes a story Upton shared with the guests in a suite at Wrigley Field during a Cubs game about how her boyfriend responded to a horrible start.

“It was my birthday, and he had probably like his worst game ever, and no one had any idea how he’d respond to his worst game ever,” Upton said according to Cogan. “He vented to me in the car and was like, ‘I am going to get blackout drunk.’ So a bunch of us went out and got blackout drunk! I had really good plans to eat popcorn and watch a movie, but he was like, ‘I don’t want to think about it, at all.'”

Upton’s birthday is on June 10. Verlander was in the middle of a terrible stretch at the time. He had a stretch in mid-May where he allowed at least five runs in three straight games. On June 5, he gave up six runs to the Blue Jays. Then on June 11, which is probably the outing to which Upton was referring, Verlander was hammered for four runs in the sixth inning against the White Sox and charged with seven runs in the defeat because the relievers fared even worse. He also allowed 12 hits and seven runs in his following start, so really, any of these starts could have qualified.

But yeah, sometimes you can’t internalize your failures as an athlete, and the best way to move on is to wipe out the memory. For Verlander, I guess that means hitting the bottle fairly hard at times and pressing the erase button.

Kevin Love expected to play bigger role for Cavs this season

Kevin Love

There were several times during the 2014-2015 season when it appeared Kevin Love would be a one-year rental for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Yet here he is, and LeBron James, David Blatt and the rest of the Cavs are expecting an entirely different Love going forward.

Or, should we say, the old Love.

“I just think he’s more comfortable in the situation that he’s in,” LeBron told reporters after practice Wednesday, per Dave McMenamin of ESPN.com. “He’s got a year under his belt; he knows what he expects out of himself and what his teammates expect out of him. I expect big things from him this year with a year up under his belt.”

The Cavs have been open about their plans to give James more rest this season after he averaged 42.2 minutes per game in what was a very long postseason. If Love can revert back to the form that earned him three All-Star appearances from 2011-2014, that shouldn’t create any issues for Cleveland.

After averaging 16.4 points, 9.7 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game last season, Love finally appeared to his his stride in the playoffs. Then he got hurt, and LeBron feels the injury helped Love realize his importance to the team.

“I think him being out showed even more of what he means to this team, more than him being on the floor for those (playoff) games,” James said. “It would’ve been huge for us obviously if he was in the lineup, but it gave him the opportunity to put things in perspective and see what his presence can mean to our team. Sometimes you have to take a step backwards to see how important you are.”

LeBron almost carried the Cavs to a championship by himself when Love and Kyrie Irving both went down, but he needed help against the Golden State Warriors. Love is confident he can provide it this year.

“I think all of us will be more comfortable with what we’re trying to do out there,” he said. “I think that, like I said [Monday], it all starts with the big man, No. 23, and it all kind of trickles down from there. I think if all the pieces fit together as we expect, we’ll be a tough team to deal with.”

Unless LeBron was being sarcastic with this tweet over the summer, it appears any tension that existed between him and Love last season has subsided. That in itself is a step in the right direction.

Son of Julia Louis-Dreyfus makes Northwestern basketball team as walk-on

Charlie Hall Northwestern

The latest addition to the Northwestern men’s basketball team might have you exclaiming “get out!” in disbelief.

Yes, Charlie Hall, the son of actors Brad Hall and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, has made the Northwestern basketball team as a walk-on. Louis-Dreyfus is best known for her role as Elaine on “Seinfeld” and most recently Selina Meyer on “Veep.”

The team’s SID welcomed Hall to the program via Twitter Wednesday:

Hall is a freshman from Los Angeles and played high school ball at Crossroads School, the same private school in LA that produced Baron Davis. Both of his parents attended Northwestern.

According to his profile on the Wildcats’ website, Hall averaged 15.3 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists per game as a senior for Crossroads, earning first-team all league and second-team All-CIF honors. The 6-foot-5 forward also played volleyball for his high school.

Hopefully his college athletic career lasts longer than that of another famous person’s son.

Here is a highlight video of the lefty. He has a pretty sweet stroke:

Jon Gruden salary is high – supposedly paid $6.5 million by ESPN

Jon Gruden banana

All those rumors about NFL teams being interested in Jon Gruden have certainly paid off — at least for the former coach.

According to information shared by James Andrew Miller, the author of the ESPN book, Gruden makes around $6.5 million a year to serve as an analyst for ESPN. The matter came up when a fan inquired about Gruden’s salary to SI media reporter Richard Deitsch, who then turned it over to Miller, who came through with a response over Twitter.

That is major money and would definitely explain why the former Super Bowl winner is content remaining as a broadcaster rather than returning to coaching.

Gruden analyzes the weekly “Monday Night Football” games, some college football games, comments on the NFL Draft, and does his quarterback camp feature for ESPN. He certainly is a presence on the network, but it’s not like he’s on there daily, so that is a lot of money to pay him. But when there is a seemingly annual threat of NFL teams coming to hire him, ESPN needs to pay the man or risk losing him, which would explain the high pay.

If the figure is accurate, then that means Gruden is making more money than his brother Jay, Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett, and Super Bowl-winning coaches Mike McCarthy and Mike Tomlin, among others. That’s good money if you can get it, and it sure explains why he constantly turns down NFL jobs. Less pressure, more visibility, more security … why not?

Brian Urlacher personally endorsed Jared Allen to Ron Rivera

Jared Allen

The Carolina Panthers acquired Jared Allen from the Chicago Bears in a trade this week, and one former player gave the move his seal of approval.

Brian Urlacher, an 8-time Pro Bowler who competed against Allen in the NFC North for several years, texted Panthers head coach Ron Rivera to endorse Allen.

Rivera was Urlacher’s defensive coordinator with the Bears from 2004-2006, which probably explains how/why they are on a texting basis. And though Allen’s play has fallen off — he only had 5.5 sacks last year compared to 11.5 the year before — the Panthers could use his help now that Charles Johnson is out indefinitely with a hamstring injury. Rivera is tentatively planning to play Allen 35-40 snaps per game at the right defensive end spot.

James Harden liked Beyonce wearing his jersey on stage

Beyonce James Harden

There are few greater honors for an athlete than having a true superstar like Beyonce wear your jersey and number on stage. James Harden recognizes that.

Earlier this month, Beyonce wore a customized version of Harden’s Houston Rockets jersey made into a bathing suit for a performance. Harden commented about it on Instagram, giving his approval.

“Bey got too much swagger in that jersey!! @beyonce #MadeinAmerica #H-Tiinnnneeeee” he wrote.

Harden was further asked by SI for his response to Beyonce’s outfit, and his response/body language made it clear he liked it.

From a piece by Jeremy Woo published Wednesday:

Harden approved. “I got so many tweets and pictures sent to my phone about that,” he says, chuckling.

He quickly changes tune, as if trying to deflect the attention. “She’s repping Houston, she’s from there. She’s just showing love back to where she’s from.” Still, that moment of discovery had to have been crazy for him, right? “Yeah,” Harden admits sheepishly. His grin, though fleeting, speaks volumes.

Harden can’t act too excited about the development considering he’s dating Khloe Kardashian and all, but there’s no shame here. That’s a huge honor for you, James. We’d be psyched too.

Greg Olsen: Cam Newton wouldn’t lie about Ed Hochuli

Ed-Hochuli-Cam-Newton

The NFL has not been able to track down audio of the exchange between Cam Newton and referee Ed Hochuli last weekend, so the case is basically closed. That doesn’t necessarily mean Newton was lying, and one of his teammates is confident that the Panthers quarterback wouldn’t fabricate a story like that.

During an appearance on PFT Live Tuesday, tight end Greg Olsen said he has no reason to not believe Newton.

“Cam obviously made it pretty clear what he heard and there’s no reason to believe that Cam would make something up,” Olsen said. “That’s not Cam, that’s not the way he operates. … He’s not a complainer, that’s just not his personality. And so obviously he felt like he was disrespected and Cam spoke up for himself and said what he needed to say and that’s kind of the way it is.”

Newton claims Hochuli told him he was “not old enough” to get a late hit call on a questionable play. Hochuli insists he told Newton he did not get the call because he was running on the play, and a video appears to show those words coming out of Hochuli’s mouth toward the end of the brief discussion.

Olsen said it was obvious right away that Hochuli had said something that bothered Newton.

“We could tell he was obviously pretty frustrated by something,” he added. “He was still kind of talking with Ed and kind of walking back you could see with his body language he was a little befuddled over something. We went right into the next play. We didn’t really have a chance, we really didn’t have much of a discussion on it during the game but after the game he made it pretty clear that he felt like it was a disrespectful comment and something that he wanted to get out there.”

When asked on Wednesday about Hochuli’s denial, Newton didn’t back down.

The NFL has basically said that there is no proof Hochuli did anything wrong, so the incident will not be investigated any further. Imagine if they took that same stance with Deflategate? That would have been nice.

Pau Gasol reportedly had sinus surgery over summer to aid breathing

Pau-Gasol

“Breathe, breathe in the air. Don’t be afraid to care.” Bulls big man Pau Gasol apparently took the advice from that classic Dark Side of the Moon lyric to heart over the summer.

On Wednesday, Gasol revealed to reporters that he underwent nasal surgery this offseason to help aid his breathing.

If Gasol’s MVP performance at EuroBasket this past month (where he led the team to the title, raining a 40-point downpour against France in the semi-final) was any indication, then the surgery was a massive success.

The five-time NBA All-Star had a big-time resurgence in his first season with the Bulls last year. Freed from the fetters of Mike D’Antoni and the Lakers, Gasol posted 18.5 points per game, 11.8 rebounds per game, and 1.9 blocks per game.

In true Tom Thibodeau-fashion, Gasol was played 34.4 minutes per game last season, though under new Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg, that number could dip a bit in 2015-16.

At 35 years of age and with all that screaming he does down low, the surgery (a clean means of rejuvenation for Gasol) should do him some good and ensure that we get at least a few more quality seasons from our seven-foot Spanish basketball deity.

Bud Norris wants foreign players to respect American culture of baseball

Bud Norris Orioles

San Diego Padres pitcher Bud Norris found himself in headlines Wednesday for making some opinionated comments about the culture of American baseball and how foreign players fit in.

The comments were made to USA Today as part of an article by Jorge L. Ortiz, who posits that many of the fights/bench-clearing brawls in baseball are the result of a culture clash between white players and Hispanic players. For instance, his article indicates clashes are the result of Latin American players not following the “unwritten rules” of the game, leading to tension with American/white players.

Norris agrees.

“I think it’s a culture shock,’’ Norris said via USA Today. “This is America’s game. This is America’s pastime, and over the last 10-15 years we’ve seen a very big world influence in this game, which we as a union and as players appreciate. We’re opening this game to everyone that can play. However, if you’re going to come into our country and make our American dollars, you need to respect a game that has been here for over a hundred years, and I think sometimes that can be misconstrued. There are some players that have antics, that have done things over the years that we don’t necessarily agree with.

“I understand you want to say it’s a cultural thing or an upbringing thing. But by the time you get to the big leagues, you better have a pretty good understanding of what this league is and how long it’s been around.’’

First off, it’s not set in stone that the culture clash is the reason for the fights. Madison Bumgarner was cited as an example of someone who got in fights because of his incident with Alex Guerrero. But that ignores that Bumgarner is just a passionate player who also has had incidents with an umpire and a fellow American pitcher. Some players just are more combative than others and like being involved in incidents.

Then you have guys like Carlos Gomez, who just rubs tons of opposing players in the wrong way because of his passion and the way he breaks the unwritten rules. He was quoted heavily in the article.

The argument brought up by Norris is a microcosm of societal problems at large. Should foreign people or immigrants assimilate to the American way? Do they need to learn English? Or can they continue speaking their native language and enjoying their cultures? I think a lot of efforts should be made by guests or foreigners to adapt and fit in to their new home while still maintaining what they feel is important about their roots. And I believe that in a baseball-specific case.

I grew up in the American culture of baseball where not showing up opponents and respecting the game were major tenets. Not everyone followed those principles because society is full of different people, which means, yes, we had fights between American players — not just between Americans and Latin American ones — so I don’t completely agree that the fights in baseball are due to a culture clash. Many people are rubbed in the wrong way by anyone who stands out from the crowd by doing things differently. Recall that Norris mocked eccentric reliever Brian Wilson in the past. It’s clear that he doesn’t like any non-conformists.

Bottom line to me: if you don’t like the way a guy celebrated a home run against you, respond by getting him out the next time, not by yelling at him or hitting him. Doesn’t that make a lot more sense about the best way to get even than by getting into fights?

Victor Cruz suffers setback with calf injury

Victor-Cruz

The frustrations for Victor Cruz continued on Wednesday, as the New York Giants wide receiver left practice early after re-aggravating his calf injury.

Cruz made his official 2015 practice debut and was optimistic he would be able to play against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Unfortunately, he has found himself on the shelf once again.

“Victor came out and tried to do individuals,” Giants coach Tom Coughlin told reporters, via Jordan Ranaan of NJ.com. “He felt the calf again and that’s all he did.”

That all but guarantees that Cruz will not be available for Sunday’s game, and it is not a good sign for his availability going forward.

Cruz appeared in just six games last season before suffering a ruptured patellar tendon in his right knee. There has been no mention of that injury recently, but the strained calf has been an issue since the summer.

If and when Cruz can return, he would give New York’s passing game a boost alongside a certain teammate who is known for making mind-blowing catches. However, it would be fair for Giants fans to wonder if they are going to see Cruz at any point this season given his inability to stay on the field. He has to be incredibly disappointed in Wednesday’s turn of events.

Adrian Peterson takes shot at Christian Ponder

Christian Ponder

The continued development of Teddy Bridgewater will be crucial to the success of the Minnesota Vikings this season, and Adrian Peterson believes that the former Louisville star is coming along just fine. Or, at the very least, AP feels Bridgewater is a major step up over Christian Ponder.

When asked on Wednesday about the poise Bridgewater has shown this season, Peterson took a cheap shot at Ponder.

Ponder started the majority of Minnesota’s games from 2011-2013. The Vikings finished with a combined record of 18-29-1 during that span and lost the only playoff game in which they appeared. Peterson has never really shown support for Ponder publicly, and he made some remarks before last season that certainly did not make Ponder feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

As long as Peterson is at the peak of his game, the Vikings really need Bridgewater to be more of a game manager than a playmaker. He has thrown just one touchdown pass and two interceptions through three games, but the Vikings are off to a 2-1 start. In many ways, winning is all that really matters for a quarterback.

Ponder remains a free agent, but the good news is he gets to spend more time with his beautiful wife. I’d much rather do that than play alongside a superstar who is going to criticize me.

Brittney Griner kicks pregnant wife Glory Johnson out of house

Glory Johnson Brittney Griner

WNBA stars Brittney Griner and Glory Johnson filed to have their marriage nullified back in June, and things have gotten quite ugly since. The divorce has not been finalized, but Griner recently kicked Johnson out of the former couple’s home.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, a judge has awarded Griner temporary exclusive use of the couple’s Arizona home while the divorce is being finalized. Johnson, who is pregnant with twins, needs to schedule a date to pick up her personal belongings. She will reportedly need to be accompanied by a police officer and be given 20 minutes to gather her things.

The relationship between Griner and Johnson has always been loaded with drama. The couple tied the knot soon after they were both arrested for assault, and the marriage hardly lasted a month. Things took a bizarre turn when Johnson announced she was pregnant and Griner reportedly claimed she was blindsided by it. Earlier this year, Johnson explained her attraction to Griner in an interesting way.

Johnson is due to give birth to Twins in January, and she says she initially planned to raise the children with Griner. It’s unclear if Griner plans to have any role in the children’s lives.

Rex Ryan still isn’t over Patriots ‘trying to embarrass’ Bills

Rex Ryan Bills

All Rex Ryan could do before his team played the New England Patriots in Week 2 was talk about how they were going to be ready and weren’t afraid of Bill Belichick and his unmatched track record. Nearly two weeks after being handed a beating, Ryan still hasn’t gotten over it.

On Wednesday, a reporter asked Ryan about facing Eli Manning this weekend. Rex found a way to work the Patriots into the conversation.

“I like the fact that he beat (Tom) Brady twice. I like that,” he said, via Tyler Dunne of The Buffalo News. “I’m not all the way over the Brady butt-kicking he did against us.”

Ryan should be over his Week 2 loss by now, especially after destroying the Miami Dolphins last weekend on the road. He was then asked how he was able to get his players to refocus after getting clobbered by New England.

“We are who we are and we don’t need to apologize for it,” Ryan said. “Our emotions got the better of us but I loved how we battled back when a team was clearly trying to embarrass us. We scored three TD to their three points. We’ll see. We’ll play that one down the road.”

The 40-32 final was not indicative of how badly the Patriots manhandled the Bills. Brady threw for 466 yards — a record for any quarterback against the Bills — and tossed three touchdown passes. New England let its foot off the gas at the end and probably got too caught up trying to embarrass Buffalo, as Ryan alluded to.

Ryan knows his team has to face the Patriots again this season, which is why he has made remarks like this in the wake of the first matchup. But next time, it probably wouldn’t hurt to tone down the trash talk just a bit. It clearly motivated Belichick’s squad.

Jason Pierre-Paul no-shows charity appearance

Jason Pierre-Paul

Jason Pierre-Paul has not yet signed his franchise tender and returned to the New York Giants, which apparently means he is not ready to resume his obligations to charitable organizations, either.

Ebenezer Samuel of the New York Daily News reports that Pierre-Paul was scheduled to appear at the Harboring Hearts Benefit in Manhattan on Tuesday night but never showed up. It would have been his first appearance in New York since he met with the Giants over Labor Day Weekend.

Pierre-Paul wasn’t the only one, as fellow Giants players Landon Collins and Damontre Moore were also scheduled to attend and didn’t make it. A spokesperson for the event said the three players were stuck in traffic.

It’s unclear what route the players took to the event that apparently made it impossible for them to attend.

No timetable has been set for JPP to return. There have been rumblings that the Giants do not believe the 26-year-old defensive end will be able to play football this season, and you’ll know why when you see the photos of his injured hand. Karlos Williams a fantasy option with LeSean McCoy likely out

Karlos-Williams

LeSean McCoy is battling a hamstring injury that could force him to miss Week 4 against the New York Giants. That would thrust rookie running back Karlos Williams into a starting role and make him a great one-week fantasy option.

Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan said Wednesday that it “doesn’t look good” for McCoy to play against the G-Men. Given the way Williams has looked so far, it would make no sense to rush McCoy back at less than 100 percent.

Williams, a fifth-round draft pick out of Florida State, has averaged a whopping 7.8 yards per carry through Buffalo’s first three games. He has also scored three touchdowns and been the team’s primary goal line back. Even if McCoy plays, Williams has earned his share of the workload.

For those in need of running back help, Williams should be a good flex option for the rest of the season and could flirt with RB1 status for any games McCoy might miss. Williams is a must-add in all formats.

Arian Foster could play Week 4, will be game-time decision

Arian Foster

The Houston Texans have struggled to score points through the first three weeks of the season, and a lot of that has to do with Arian Foster being out with a groin injury. Fortunately, it appears that help is on the way.

Texans coach Bill O’Brien has labeled Foster a game-time decision for Week 4 against the Atlanta Falcons, according to ESPN’s Ed Werder. O’Brien said he won’t know Foster’s status until roughly 90 minutes before game time.

Earlier this week, O’Brien said Foster is “close” to making his return. It should be noted that the 29-year-old has yet to get in a full week of practice, so he probably needs to do more before he can suit up for an actual game.

Texans running back Alred Blue broke out last week with 31 carries for 139 yards and a touchdown in a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but those types of performances will be outliers for him. That is the type of stat line we are used to Foster posting on a weekly basis, and the 1-2 Texans could certainly use him to develop a more balanced attack.

It initially looked like Foster would be out longer than four games when he suffered the groin injury in training camp, but perhaps these comments from team owner Bob McNair served as motivation for him. Expect Foster to handle a full workload as soon as he is healthy enough to return.

Jonathan Papelbon bought $2.9 million home in DC on Sept. 14

Jonathan Papelbon Bryce Harper

Washington Nationals reliever Jonathan Papelbon recently purchased a rather expensive home in the D.C. area. Can you say bad timing?

According to the Washington Business Journal, Papelbon and his wife Ashley closed on a $2.9 million home in Belle Haven on Sept. 14. The five-bedroom house was assessed at $1.5 million.

Why might that be an issue? As you have probably heard, Papelbon and Nationals superstar Bryce Harper got in a fight in the dugout over the weekend. Papelbon was apparently angry that Harper did not hustle on a routine fly ball, and the closer was seen on camera choking his younger teammate. As a result, Papelbon has been suspended for the remainder of the season.

Papelbon, 34, is under contract next season with a salary of $11 million. He would be very difficult to trade, but Nationals fans are already crying for the team to release the veteran.

Of course, Washington would have to pay Papelbon the $11 million he is owed in 2016 if they decide to cut him. That should help him cover the cost of his new home, even if Pap and his wife had bigger plans for the place.

High school QB Evan Murray dies from lacerated spleen

Warren-Hills-High-School

A New Jersey high school football player died last week as a result of an injury he suffered during a game.

On Monday, a medical examiner revealed that the cause of 17-year-old Evan Murray’s death was severe internal bleeding due to a lacerated spleen. Morris County Medical Examiner Dr. Ronald Suarez determined that Murray had an enlarged spleen which made it more susceptible to injury, according to NJ.com’s Jim Deegan.

Murray, the starting quarterback for Warren Hill Regional High School for the past three years, was injured during his team’s game on Friday night. The Associated Press reports that he took a number of hits in the first half and walked off under his own power after being tackled in the backfield during the second quarter. Murray later collapsed and told teammates he felt “woozy” after the play, but he assured them he would be fine as he was lifted on a gurney and transported to a local hospital.

“He tried giving a thumbs-up to the rest of the team, and all of us cheered,” said Kaitlin Bell, a 16-year-old cheerleader, told the AP. “Our coach was telling us he was going to be all right. We didn’t expect anything would happen.”

Murray later lost his life at Morristown Medical Center.

Our thoughts are with Murray’s family and friends and all of those who were affected by the tragedy.

Clayton Kershaw freezes Jarrett Parker on knee-buckling curveball (Video)

Jarrett Parker curveball

Clayton Kershaw had his Cy Young stuff working on Tuesday. And by Cy Young stuff, we mean his filthy, borderline no-hitter, why-even-bother-to-step-into-the-box stuff.

Take a look at this knee-buckling curveball he froze poor rookie Jarrett Parker with:

That pitch had more hook than a Murphy Lee song.

No surprise, Kershaw blanked the Giants in a 1-hit, 13-strikeout shutout to clinch the NL West. Poor Parker. The look of frustration all over his face makes you just feel badly for him. He was so overmatched. Someone give him a hug.

Giants congratulate Dodgers on winning NL West with scoreboard message

Dodgers-Giants-scoreboard

The Los Angeles Dodgers scored a sweet victory over their rival San Francisco Giants Tuesday night by winning 8-0 to clinch the NL West at AT&T Park in front of thousands of Giants fans.

Though the Giants’ hopes of reaching the postseason officially ended, the team was gracious in defeat. They posted a message on their scoreboard congratulating the Dodgers on winning the division:

They also posted this message on Twitter:

Those are impressive gestures by the Giants, who have seen plenty of success winning three World Series since 2010. Perhaps the recent taste of victory for the Giants made it easy to congratulate the hated rivals.

For LA, this was a long time coming. They limped to the division crown by posting a pair of 4-game losing streaks the past two weeks before finally eliminating the Giants in what has been a disappointing season for the NL West. They will take on the New York Mets in the playoffs.

Man found guilty of murdering Adrian Peterson’s son

Joseph Patterson

Joseph Patterson has been convicted of murdering the 2-year-old son of Adrian Peterson two years ago.

Patterson was standing trial for the murder of Tyrese Ruffin committed in Oct. 2013 and was found guilty on all counts. The charges included second-degree murder, first degree manslaughter and aggravated battery against a person under the age of three, the Argus Leader reports.

Patterson is awaiting sentencing and could spend the rest of his life in prison. His loved ones apparently took the news in a tough way.

It did not take long for the jury to deliberate in the matter. The Leader says it took just five hours to return the guilty verdicts.

Patterson’s attorney tried to argue Ruffin died from choking on a fruit snack, while the prosecutors said it was due to blunt force trauma.

Patterson was said to be dating the mother of the child at the time of the incident nearly two years ago. Peterson had only recently found out about the boy prior to the murder, and he had never met the young child.

Andre Iguodala not a fan of sixth man award

Andre Iguodala face

While Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green received much of the praise for the success of the Warriors last season, it was Andre Iguodala who walked away with the NBA Finals MVP Award.

After starting every game he appeared in for the first 10 seasons of his career, Iguodala shifted to a bench role last year for Steve Kerr. Including the playoffs, Iguodala played in 98 games last season. The only ones he started were the final three.

Iguodala responded, helping the Warriors to title which proved to be the ultimate reward for his sacrifice. The veteran forward will come off the bench once again in the upcoming season for the Warriors and is perfectly fine with that. Just don’t mention to him the possibility of being named the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year.

“I’m not a fan of the award, actually,” Iguodala said via USA Today. “It’s like affirmative action or something to me.”

Iguodala has been an all-star and has been the focal point of a team, having led the Sixers in scoring a couple of seasons. However, last season was a different position for him to be in and Iguodala buying in paid big dividends for both he and the team. With the core of the championship-winning team in tact, Golden State will be looking to win back-to-back titles like the Heat did in 2012 and 2013. If that’s going to happen, Andre Iguodala will probably once again be a key component, even if it’s as a reserve.

Jared Dudley says Adam Morrison never showered

adam-morrison-nets

Former No. 3 overall pick Adam Morrison has racked up an enviable amount of awards and honors over the course of his basketball career. He won back-to-back championships with the Lakers in 2009 and 2010, was selected to the All-Rookie Second Team in 2007, and was a First-Team All-American and Division I scoring leader back in his college days. Just don’t expect to find the Personal Hygiene Award anywhere in Morrison’s trophy case.

Wizards forward Jared Dudley, a teammate of Morrison’s on the 2007-08 Bobcats, told some rather stomach-churning tales about the Gonzaga product’s sense of cleanliness in a radio interview with 106.7 The Fan DC in Washington on Monday.

“Remember Adam Morrison?” said Dudley via the Washington Post. “He never took showers, he did the chewing tobacco that he spit all the time, and he wore the same three polos the whole year. This is a guy who made a lot of money, too, at that time. He was the face of diabetes, he was doing everything, he was on the cover of college games, he was [everywhere], and he was by far the worst and [most] disgusting.”

“He was playing when I was there, that’s the thing, he was playing,” Dudley continued. “He then tore his ACL, that’s when he didn’t play, but he was playing when I was there. He was playing like 30 minutes a game. Gerald Wallace had to force him to take a shower one time. Had to force him. Imagine that. Imagine forcing a grown man to take a shower. He should be ashamed of himself.”

Excuse me while I reach for the nearest vomit bag.

Oh man, I can only imagine how badly that Bobcats locker room reeked whenever Morrison was around. Probably the most ungodly mix of salty-smelling tears, mustache sweat, day-old chicken breast, expired milk, and mediocrity. Sorry Adam but no amount of championship rings in the world will ever be able to make you live this one down. Absolutely revolting.

Week 4 expert NFL Picks against the spread – Del’s selections

As promised, both Doc Brown and Del got back on track with their Week 3 picks after a somewhat disappointing Week 2. The Doc killed it with a 10-6 record against the spread and Del wasn’t far behind at 9-7. More importantly, the resident experts here at LBS were a combined 3-0 in their locks of the week. Del is now 5-1-1 on the season in the money-making picks, for those keeping track at home.

Let’s keep it rolling into Week 4. We mentioned last week how there were a lot of close spreads, and this week is quite the opposite. There are plenty of mismatches across the league, which can often make games even more difficult to pick. We’ll do our best.

Here are Del’s Week 4 NFL picks, with analysis and locks to come later:

Oakland A’s hire female coach to be guest instructor

Justine Siegal baseball

The Oakland A’s are following the lead of the San Antonio Spurs and Arizona Cardinals by hiring a female coach.

The A’s announced Tuesday that they have hired Justine Siegal to serve as a guest instructor for their Instructional League team next month. Siegal is expected to throw batting practice, hit fungos, and work with infielders. Siegal, who threw batting practice for the A’s, Indians, Rays, Cardinals, Astros and Mets in 2011, says she is willing to do much more.

The 40-year-old believes she will be able to use her background of having a Ph.D. in sport and exercise psychology to help the team.

“As a rookie coach, I expect to hit a lot of fungos, throw a lot of batting practice and help out wherever they want me to help,” Siegal said. “And I do like talking about life skills; I like to help people achieve their life goals.”

Siegal seems to have a great attitude and says she is willing to do anything the team wants, including carrying water. She also believes the players will accept her coaching.

“I’ve found from experience that men are surprised to have a woman coach, but when they realize you know what you’re talking about and that you care, you fit right in with the rest of the staff,” Siegal told the San Francisco Chronicle.

A’s assistant GM David Forst says nothing has been promised to Siegal as far as full-time jobs go, but that is a possibility.

Siegal getting this opportunity is not too surprising. Not only does she have a strong educational background in sports, but she also went to MLB scout school; she serves as head coach and founder of “Baseball For All,” a non-profit aimed towards achieving equal opportunities for girls in baseball; and she is the co-chairperson of SABR’s Women in Baseball Committee.

And what’s her philosophy?

In the past year, great strides have been made with regard to women in sports. The Spurs had Becky Hammon coach their Summer League team; the Arizona Cardinals had Jen Welter intern with the team as a coach; and the Sacramento Kings hired Nancy Lieberman as an assistant coach. It’s 2015, and barriers are being broken.

Daniel Cormier: Jonathan Papelbon’s fighting skill is terrible (Video)

Jonathan Papelbon Bryce Harper

During Sunday’s game between the Nationals and Phillies, Bryce Harper and Jonathan Papelbon got into a physical altercation in the dugout. Papelbon was apparently not happy with Harper’s lack of hustle after flying out and let Harper know about it. Papelbon went after Harper, looking like he was going to strangle him.

While the incident was labeled a fight, one man who knows a thing or two about such things downplayed what he saw transpire. UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier said the technique Papelbon used was “terrible” when speaking with TMZ.

Poor form aside, the Nationals suspended Papelbon for four games without pay for going after Harper. That’s in addition to the three-game suspension that was handed down by Major League Baseball.

The two suspensions bring Jonathan Papelbon’s 2015 season to an end with the Nationals eliminated from playoff contention. However, with the veteran pitcher having an $11 million player option for next year, it’s entirely possible he and Harper could be teammates once again next year. For the Nationals’ sake, hopefully there aren’t any lingering effects.

Tom Brady Deflategate appeal could begin week of Super Bowl

Tom Brady

By the time Super Bowl 50 rolls around, it will have been more than a year since the term “Deflategate” was coined. Yet, somehow, we could still be talking about Tom Brady and his involvement in the New England Patriots’ alleged ball tampering scheme the week of the big game.

A federal appeals court on Tuesday granted a request from the NFL and NFL Players Association to expedite the Second Circuit appeal of U.S. District Court Judge Richard M. Berman’s decision to vacate Brady’s four-game suspension. The appeal could begin as early as the week of Feb. 1, 2016 with oral arguments.

What does this mean? For starters, it guarantees that Brady will not end up having to serve a suspension at any point during the 2015 season, despite what one recent report wanted us to believe. However, the timing also means that we could be talking about more Deflategate court proceedings in the days leading up to the Super Bowl — not that the topic wouldn’t have come up anyway.

Given how the Patriots have played through the first three weeks of the season and the way the rest of the AFC looks, Brady could wind up playing in his seventh Super Bowl in February. If that does happen, he’s probably not escaping the Deflategate discussion.

Derrick Rose suffers orbital fracture, will require surgery

Derrick Rose

NBA training camps began this week, and Derrick Rose has already suffered his first significant injury of the 2015-2016 season.

The Chicago Bulls announced on Tuesday that Rose was struck in the face with an elbow during practice and ended up with a fractured left orbital. He will undergo surgery on Wednesday. No timetable has been given for his return.

Rose has not played a full season in over three years due to various injuries, most of which have had to do with his knees. The only silver lining for Bulls fans this time is that a fractured orbital should have no effect on Rose’s mobility. There is also plenty of time to recover before the start of the regular season.

Rose will be looking to regain some of the explosiveness he had several seasons ago this year. It’s unclear how much his latest injury will set him back. The 26-year-old has also been dealing with a lawsuit this offseason after a woman accused him and two friends of drugging and gang-raping her.

While it could be worse, this is certainly not the way the Bulls wanted to begin training camp.

Derrick Rose says rape accuser was angry she wasn’t reimbursed for sex toy

Derrick Rose

An explosive lawsuit was filed against Derrick Rose last month alleging that the Chicago Bulls forward and two friends drugged and gang-raped a woman more than two years ago. Rose has vehemently denied the accusations, and he claims the accuser only originally became angry with him over something having to do with a sex toy.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Rose says the accuser “consented to sexual interaction with more than one co-defendant on more than one occasion, consented to sexual interactions on the day in question, and invited the defendants to her apartment and buzzed them in.” The woman is claiming Rose and two friends broke into her apartment. Rose says the accuser was perfectly fine with everything the following day and only became angry with him when he refused to reimburse her for a — ahem — prop she had used.

In the docs, Rose says the woman only began to get upset with him a few weeks or months later because she felt she should have been reimbursed for one of the sex toys she bought and used during the night in question.

Rose says the woman got even angrier with him because he started ignoring her texts.

The woman is seeking unspecified damages.

Rose played in 51 games last season for the Chicago Bulls. He split with his longtime girlfriend in late 2013, a year after she gave birth to their son. It is unclear whether this accuser is the same woman.

Winter is Coming: Get Your Electric Cart Ready!

Okay, maybe it’s a little too early to start talking about winter, but some of you have been asking us how to take care of your electric golf cart once the colder, and wetter, weather comes upon us. We’ve scoured the resources of the Internet, as well as our own experience, to come up with a few easy pointers that will help you and your golf cart survive the tempest!

The first, and most important topic: batteries. Since the batteries are the most important part of the cart, they will also take up most of this post.

It is important that your batteries are fully charged before you start this process.

Yamaha Electric Golf Cart Run Tow SwitchThe first thing that you want to do is unplug the battery charger. Next, we recommend switching the tow/run switch to the TOW position; this shuts off all power to the electrical components of the cart. Remove the key from the ignition, if you haven’t already done so.

Now you want to clean off the batteries. These batteries contain sulfuric acid, and it can destroy clothing, burn skin, and cause other serious damage. It is very important to protect yourself when dealing with golf cart batteries. Proper gloves and eye protection are recommended; as well, remove any dangling jewelry such as watches, bracelets, and necklaces, as they could make a contact between battery terminals, causing sparks, or worse. If a contact is made, back away quickly and assess the situation before proceeding. There is also no reason to disconnect the batteries from the cart.

Cleaning the batteries can be done with a simple solution of 1 tablespoon of baking soda to 6-8 ounces of water. Another recipe was 1 pound of baking soda to 1 gallon of water. Even sprinkling straight baking soda will work. You might want to check with your municipality regulations, as washing that much baking soda into our streams might not be healthy for the fish and other wildlife. A neutralizer is also available as a spray or applicator. Which ever way you go, make sure to leave it on for the recommended time (about 5 minutes for baking soda); then rinse with a lot of water. Spraying inside the battery compartment is okay, as long as you aren’t directing long and hard pressure at the other electrical components.

Once the batteries are rinsed and clean, allow the cart to dry off a little, then wipe down the batteries with a cloth. While you’re drying them off, make a point to check the connections on the terminals, noting any loose wires or connectors, additional corrosion, or anything that just doesn’t look quite right. Tighten the connections and replace any wires that are corroded or damaged.

Batteries contain sulfuric acid, which is created using lead plates. Those plates need to be completely submersed in liquid in order to create an efficient charge. Many electric golf carts have a refilling systems installed that allows you to refill the batteries using one connection without having to remove the caps. These usually require the use of a battery fill bottle, available with us, or at your local parts supplier. If you don’t have an auto-filling system, the use of a filler bottle still makes it easier.battery fill bottle

Check the levels of the batteries by carefully removing the caps, remembering that this is acid, and acid burns the skin and destroys clothes! With a flashlight, ensure that the plates are fully covered with water. If not, add only distilled water, slowly raising the level until the plates are covered. Do not overfill, but if you do, use a baster or a hygrometer to remove the water. Once the batteries are at their optimal levels, replace the caps, and thoroughly rinse the battery area once again.

An anti-corrosion solution can be used to protect the battery terminals. You can use a spray protector or a gel/paste, either of these are available at your parts store. Use liberally, but be careful to follow instructions, and don’t get it on your paint job. You wouldn’t want to ruin the flames!

The final step with the batteries is to charge them again, especially if you added water to them. Get them fully charged.

There are various opinions regarding charging batteries over a long period of time. It is common practice to plug in the charger, especially if you are using a newer style with meters and timers, and leave the batteries plugged in for longer periods, even up to a month or more. Most chargers will stop and shut off once the batteries are fully charged, or go to a trickle mode; however, some chargers will shut off at a full charge, and not come on again unless the charger is unplugged from the cart, and then plugged in again. We also suggest leaving the switch in the TOW position, and if you can, use a high quality surge bar that protects against surges, spikes, and lightning strikes. Many come with warranties; check at your electronics store to see what is covered. If at all possible, check on the charger every couple of week, even have a friendly neighbour come over if you can’t. Promise them BBQ steak BBQ t-bone steak grillingonce the spring season returns! If you are leaving the cart unattended for a period longer than a couple of months, you might want to consider disconnecting the batteries completely.

Here in the Pacific Northwest, we can usually expect a little bit of rain in the off-season. If at all possible, store your cart indoors, or at least under cover. Canvas covers and weather enclosures aren’t sufficient, as they can tear or wear out in the wind, and are meant for short term use. If you park your electric golf cart indoors, be sure to park it on a mat or tray to protect the floor from any battery acid that might boil over. If you are parking it indoors or under cover, open the rain cover for the clubs (over the bag well) if you have one, to prevent mildew, as it might still be damp. If you are parking the cart outside, remove the rain cover and store it open inside or under cover. Remember that cold and freezing weather can damage any see-through vinyl, making it brittle and causing it to crack and break.

Check your tire pressure; fill them to 20-25 psi for most stock turf tires, or to the suggested level on custom tires. While you’re checking the air, check the tread, making note of uneven wear, cracked sidewalls, or embedded golf tees. Repair or replace as soon as possible, but if you have to store the cart with leaking or flat tires, put the cart on blocks to prevent the tire from sitting on the rim, damaging the sideways.

Make sure that your electric golf cart is in the TOW position, remove the key, and block the tires to prevent it from rolling. Disengage the parking brake to relieve stress on the brake cable.

Finally, give your cart a hearty handshake, a hug, or blow it a kiss; whatever you’re into, and say See You Later!

Golden Tate: Opponents know what plays we are running

Jim Caldwell Lions

The Detroit Lions have looked like the Detroit Lions of old through three games this season. That is by no means a compliment. Matthew Stafford has already thrown three interceptions, and Golden Tate believes he has an idea of why Detroit’s offense has struggled.

During his weekly appearance on 105.1 Detroit Sports on Tuesday, Tate was asked about Denver Broncos cornerback Bradley Roby claiming his team knew what the Lions were going to run before they ran it on Sunday night. Tate didn’t seem surprised.

“You know, I haven’t heard that yet from that player. I didn’t read anything about it,” he said, as transcribed by Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com. “But that’s not the first time this year that another player said that. I’ve had a couple occasions in literally each game where they’ve called out our play, for one, and then afterwards been like, ‘Hey, we knew what you guys were doing.’

“All three weeks, a player has come up to me and said ‘we knew what you’re going to do.’ That’s bad.”

Play-calling has been a major issue for the Lions, and head coach Jim Caldwell stated emphatically after a 24-12 loss to the Broncos that he has no intention of taking play-calling duties away from offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi. Tate said it is important to stay within the offensive scheme that is in place, but he hinted that Stafford needs to do a better job of being a leader.

“I think it’s a little bit of both, man,” he said. “At some point, as a quarterback, this is your offense, this is really your team and you kind of got to take it over. In the game, in the heat of the battle, you’re the guy that has to make the key call or make the key throw or make the game-winning play.”

It hasn’t helped that Stafford has been banged up. He has already been sacked six times, and the Lions rank last in the league in rushing. That should tell you all you need to know about their offensive line play thus far.

Tate is not the first player this season to say opposing defenses know what plays his team is going to run. Imagine if people were saying this about the Patriots? Oh, wait…

Iman Shumpert needs wrist surgery, out 12-14 weeks

iman-shumpert-cavs

The Cavaliers’ Eastern Conference title defense is already off to a rocky start, and we’re still only in September.

On Tuesday, the team announced that guard Iman Shumpert suffered a ruptured Extensor Carpi Ulnaris sheath in his right wrist and will require surgery. Shumpert is set to have the procedure on Wednesday and is expected to be out for 12 to 14 weeks.

The 25-year-old Shumpert, the team’s best perimeter defender, was expected to start at the 2 this season. He averaged 7.2 points per game, 3.8 rebounds per game, and 1.2 assists per game for the Cavs last season after being acquired from the Knicks in a midseason trade. He just signed a 4-year, $40 million deal to remain with the team this offseason and is now possibly looking at an absence until the calendar turns to 2016.

Injuries have been killing the Cavs lately with Kyrie Irving rumored to be out until January, Kevin Love with no timetable to return from his shoulder ailment, Timofey Mozgov undergoing a minor knee procedure over the summer, and Anderson Varejao’s health a perpetual question mark. With the Tristan Thompson saga still not resolved and the team looking to play LeBron James reduced minutes next season, the Shumpert injury is an absolute killer.

Cleveland may rely on newly signed Mo Williams to log minutes at the 2-guard position, on top of his expected point guard duties, while the Cavs’ AARP squad of 34-year-old James Jones and 35-year-old Richard Jefferson could be forced into heavy minutes on the wing.

Also, the most important implication of Shumpert’s injury? Spread your wings and let it fly, J.R. Smith. Be free you beautiful, inefficient butterfly.

Report: Kevin Durant leaning toward Lakers if he leaves Thunder

Kevin Durant

Kevin Durant has gone on the record as saying he would like to spend his entire career with the Oklahoma City Thunder, but is there a chance he could replace one of the greatest players of all time if he decides to leave?

On ESPN’s “First Take” Tuesday morning, Stephen A. Smith said that sources have told him Durant’s preferred landing spot is the Los Angeles Lakers if he does not re-sign with the Thunder next summer.

“Regardless of how senseless it may (sound), in one breath I’m hearing that if Kevin Durant doesn’t stay in Oklahoma City, L.A. is his primary objective and landing spot as opposed to South Beach or even his home of Washington, D.C.,” Smith said.

That wasn’t the only seemingly far-fetched theory that Smith tossed out. He also said he has heard rumblings about Durant possibly teaming up with Carmelo Anthony and Kobe Bryant with the New York Knicks. Smith thinks Phil Jackson may have been hinting at that when he recently said Kobe could play for a team other than the Lakers.

“I heard Melo, Kevin Durant, Kobe,” Smith added. “And when you take into account that Phil Jackson is on the record saying it might be Kobe’s last year in L.A. — opening the door that there are possibilities for him to go elsewhere. All I’m saying is you just never know.”

The most likely scenario is that Durant stays in Oklahoma City. But if he did sign with the Lakers, we highly doubt it would be to team up with Bryant. That would be a more realistic option if Kobe ends up retiring.

As for the Knicks, the thought of Kobe, Durant and Anthony sharing a court seems nearly impossible. Are there even enough shots to go around?

The Durant speculation is only going to get more insane as we get through the upcoming season, and we have already heard one superstar openly admit he plans to recruit the Thunder forward. Most executives expect expect Durant to ultimately stay in Oklahoma City. While that is no lock, the ideas Stephen A. threw around just don’t seem reasonable at this point.

D’Angelo Russell on Kobe Bryant: ‘He told me he likes to shoot the ball’

kobe-bryant

The peerless Kobe Bryant has been known by many names over the course of his 19-year NBA career. The Black Mamba, Kobe Bean, Vino, Kobe Wan Kenobi, Chucker Cheese, Ground-Hog Day, Kobrick Koffee. OK, maybe I made up the last three. But if the Mamba’s recent comments to Lakers rookie D’Angelo Russell are any indication, we may have to add another one to the list: Captain Obvious.

At Media Day for the Lakers on Monday, Russell was asked to envision his first assist to Bryant and his response was one for the ages.

With a career average of 19.6 shot attempts per game and the most missed field goals in NBA history with 13,766? Yeah, I would say we agree with that assessment. And with the prospect of playing heavy minutes next to a pass-first youngblood in Russell, you know that Kobe has gotta be licking his chops like a ravenous old hound staring down a juicy slab of raw meat.

Russell isn’t the first young Lakers guard to pick up a piece of Mamba wisdom, and let’s just say that Kobe’s relationship with his shiny, new toys will be an intriguing subplot as the Lakers move into the 2015-16 season.

37 years old and that Mamba Mentality is still as strong as ever. Never stop doing you, Kobe.

Jon Jones pleads guilty to hit-and-run, gets closer to UFC reinstatement

Jon Jones

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones pleaded guilty on Tuesday to a felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident. As part of the deal, Jones will avoid jail time and instead be on supervised probation for up to 18 months.

As Brett Okamoto of ESPN.com notes, the plea agreement will allow Jones to avoid a formal felony charge if he meets certain conditions. Jones does not have to pay any fines or fees, but he has been ordered to make 72 appearances at charity or youth outreach programs. The court has granted his request to not restrict travel that pertains to his fighting career.

New Mexico court Judge Charles W. Brown told Jones he “got real lucky,” and it’s hard not to agree. Jones was accused of running a red light back on April 26 and fleeing the scene of a three-car accident. Witnesses saw him leave the scene on foot before returning to retrieve something from his vehicle. A pregnant woman was treated for an arm injury after the crash, and police reportedly found marijuana in Jones’ car.

Jones also has a history of getting into trouble, so it is somewhat of a surprise that the court was lenient with him. In 2012, he crashed his Bentley into a telephone pole in New York and pleaded guilty to drunk driving. Then in January we learned that Jones tested positive for cocaine prior to his UFC 182 fight with Daniel Cormier.

Jones was stripped of his title and suspended indefinitely by the UFC after the hit-and-run, but Dana White said Tuesday that the organization will soon discuss Jones’ possible reinstatement.

“The UFC organization is aware that Jon Jones reached a plea agreement with authorities in Albuquerque, New Mexico, this morning stemming from charges associated with a motor vehicle accident earlier this year,” White wrote in a statement. “As a result, UFC, through Las Vegas-based law firm Campbell & Williams, will thoroughly review the agreement before discussing Jones’ possible reinstatement to return to competition.”

After hearing what his trainer said a few months ago, it seemed like Jones’ career was in jeopardy. Thanks to a favorable plea deal, he will likely be back fighting again soon.

Nick Saban: 20 percent of fans are ‘disrespectful’ and ‘don’t get it’

Nick Saban Alabama

Nick Saban has never been afraid to speak his mind, and the Alabama coach did a lot of that during a lengthy interview with David Feherty that will air on the Golf Channel Wednesday evening.

Among the topics discussed were how Saban deals with the pressures of his job and the criticism that comes along with coaching the Crimson Tide. Saban said he doesn’t concern himself with what many fans say, because a significant portion of them are “bad fans” anyway.

“I just think that in every sport, there’s about 20 percent bad fans,” Saban said, per Luke Kerr-Dineen of For the Win. “They don’t get it. They’re disrespectful. They do things and say things that don’t really need to be said; that aren’t helpful; that don’t reflect the image of what college football is all about, or even what sports is all about. You should appreciate the competition.”

That’s probably true, and 20 percent may even be a conservative estimate.

Among the 20 percent Saban was referring to could be fans like this that he blasted a couple of years back.

Alabama is entering its game this weekend against Georgia as an underdog for the first time in more than six seasons. If they can’t pull the upset, that 20 percent may grow in Saban’s eyes.

Scott Tolzien: Aaron Rodgers is like Michael Jordan in his prime

Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers is at the peak of his game, and his incredible level of play in recent years has earned him comparisons with the likes of Steve Young, John Elway and other legends of the game.

But what about legends of others games? Or, better yet, one of the most recognizable athletes in the history of sports?

After Green Bay’s convincing win over the Kansas City Chiefs Monday night, backup quarterback Scott Tolzien compared Rodgers to none other than Michael Jordan.

“I mean, to me, it’s like watching Jordan in his prime,” Tolzien told Jason Wilde of ESPNWisconsin.com. “He’s at the top of his game. He makes it all go.”

Rodgers has compiled a passer rating of 135.5 through three games. He is completing an incredible 73 percent of his passes and has thrown 10 touchdowns while not committing a single turnover. In terms of dominating their respective sports, Rodgers and Jordan have plenty in common.

“I think, and I just told him after the game, you can’t take for granted what he does. I think sometimes it’s just assumed that that’s how he’s going to play,” Tolzien added. “But he controls the game. He’s just in the zone. The game just seems really slow to him. The checks he makes, the way he controls the tempo, it’s his game.”

And remember, Rodgers is doing all this without Jordy Nelson — his favorite receiver. Despite losing Nelson for the season, No. 12 hasn’t skipped a beat.

Like Jordan, Rodgers has also proven that he can talk trash with the best of them. The only thing missing from Rodgers’ resume that Jordan has is multiple championship rings. If someone told you Rodgers wouldn’t win another championship for the rest of his career, you’d probably laugh in their face.

We wouldn’t blame you.

Andrew Hawkins: Anonymous Johnny Manziel story is ‘1000% made up’

Johnny Manziel

If anonymous Cleveland Browns players truly did sound off about the team’s decision to bench Johnny Manziel in favor of Josh McCown, Andrew Hawkins insists he was not one of them.

In fact, Hawkins took to Twitter on Tuesday to accuse TMZ of citing false sources and fabricating the story altogether.

TMZ claimed to have spoken to several Browns players who were furious that McCown has remained the team’s starting quarterback now that he has cleared the NFL’s concussion protocol. The three players who provided quotes were supposedly offensive starters.

When he announced he was sticking with McCown last week, Browns coach Mike Pettine acknowledged that the entire team might not be in favor of the decision.

“There might be some differences of opinions. I doubt you are going to have your entire team 100 percent on board with what you are doing,” Pettine said, according to Mark Kay Cabot of Northeast Ohio Media Group. “We are confident that our guys are going to be behind Josh and go out and play hard.”

While McCown may be the safer choice in some ways, Manziel certainly brings a level of excitement to the team that a 36-year-old journeyman just can’t provide. Don’t be surprised if the leash on McCown is very short, whether anonymous teammates want him out of not.
