No longer just places to work up a sweat in, sports and leisure amenities are increasingly becoming an integral part of the communities they serve. The sports and leisure complex for Madrid's Francisco de Vitoria University is an exercise in considered composition. Designed by Alberto Campo Baeza, it features a brilliant white slab floating on a glazed ribbon, lying parallel to a vast, frosted-glass glass hall containing two indoor courts with auditorium seating. There’s a swimming pool as well, and although it’s in the basement, natural light floods in through a long lightwell.
